CIR completes journalism training series on skilled labour migration

Reporting fellowships announcement this week

Bringing a three-part training series on reporting on skilled labour migration to an end, the Center for Investigative reporting (CIR) recently conducted two residential workshops in Anuradhapura for 39 journalists drawn from different districts in the country. Most participants were from districts with the highest percentage of migrant workers.

Conducted under CIR’s latest initiative titled “Reporting for Change on Skilled Migration”, two parallel training programs in Sinhala and Tamil were held on 25-26 June 2023 with a view to increasing the reporting skills of select journalists on skilled migration.

Senior journalists/ media trainers Dilrukshi Handunnetti and Shihar Aneez delivered the training programs. Chrishan Pereira, Deputy Chief of Party of IESC, YouLead, Sunil Hindaramulla, Senior Manager (North Central Province), Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and Imthath Basar, Senior Project Coordinator, International organization for Migration (IOM) contributed to the program as resource persons.

Participants have been offered an opportunity to apply for 30 reporting fellowships to produce in-depth stories on skilled migration. A panel of senior editors/ channel heads will provide mentoring support to the fellows. Fellowships will be announced later this week.

The ongoing program offered 60 journalists a training opportunity on how to report on international labour migration with a focus on skilled migration.
