Application Call: Reporting on Environmental Crises

1719 August 2026, Kalutara, Sri Lanka

Asia is increasingly affected by tropical cyclones, severe flooding, extreme heat, and the resulting displacement, loss of livelihoods and disease burden. As the region is warming faster than the global average and includes 11 of the world’s 20 most climate-vulnerable countries, journalists must be equipped to report on these events at speedand responsibly.

In response to these challenges, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s Media Programme Asia, in partnership with the Centre for Investigative Reporting Sri Lanka, is organising a 3-day residential Environmental Crises Reporting Training, taking place from 17–19 August 2026 in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. Accommodation, transportation, and meals will be provided.

Upon completion, participants will be better equipped to inform and engage communities through ethical journalism and effective use of technology, to respond to climate-related disasters, and to serve as an early warning mechanism by highlighting challenges, explaining the science, and exploring solutions.

Structure:

Through a combination of expert input, practical exercises, and hands-on reporting, participants will explore the full disaster and crisis cycle. The programme concludes with a practical reporting simulation, allowing participants to apply the skills and tools acquired throughout the workshop.

Day 1 – Preparedness: Participants will receive an introduction to climate science and environmental reporting, examine necessary international frameworks, explore early warning signals, and discuss how journalists can contribute to a culture of prevention.

Day 2 – Response: Sessions will focus on reporting during an ongoing crisis, including ethical story development, framing, sourcing, verification and fact-checking under tight deadlines. Participants will also learn how to use AI tools, interpret data and includesatellite imagery.

Day 3 – Recovery: The final phase will explore how journalists report on recovery, resilience and accountability, and how to adoptasolutions journalism approach whenever possible.

Application:

We encourage mid-career journalists from South and Southeast Asia who already possess a basic understanding of environmental reporting to apply.
