Sri Lanka’s first training on reporting extreme heat

CIR, in partnership with UNFPA, concluded what we believe is the first specialized training for Sri Lankan journalists focused specifically on reporting extreme heat.

The training aimed to help journalists better understand the science, data and human impact of extreme heat as Sri Lanka faces shifting climate patterns and growing heat-related risks.

The training brought together experts including Arun Karki, a leading data journalism and open-source investigation specialist; Dilrukshi Handunnetti, an award-winning investigative journalist with expertise in climate and environmental reporting; and Rajneesh Bhandari, an experienced disaster and humanitarian crisis journalist from Nepal who is heading he Nepal Investigative Multimedia Journalism Network (NIMJN).

Extreme heat is not simply a weather story. It is also a story about health, livelihoods, inequality, vulnerable communities and the wider social and economic consequences of a changing climate. Helping journalists make those connections is increasingly important.
