CIR successfully concludes the first training on skilled labour migration reporting

The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) recently conducted a two-day training for 22 journalists on how to report on labor migration with special emphasis on skills.

The first of a three-part training series under CIR’s latest initiative titled “Reporting for Change on Skilled Migration,” the training was conducted on 9-10 June 2023 at the Raddison Hotel in Colombo.

An organization offering cutting edge training opportunities to journalists in Sri Lanka and South Asia, the intensive two-day program covered journalism best practices in reporting on migration and brought in domain experts to speak on highly relevant topics. The program included both informational and practical content.

Senior journalists Dilrukshi Handunnetti and Shihar Aneez conducted the training. Chrishan Pereira, Deputy Chief of Party of IESC, YouLead, Senarath Yapa, Deputy General Manager (Training & Recruitment), Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment ( SLBFE) and Imthath Basar, Senior Project Coordinator, International organization for Migration (IOM) served as guest speakers.

Following the training, participants were invited to pitch for a limited number of reporting fellowships and produce in-depth stories on skilled migration. A panel of senior editors/channel heads will offer mentoring support to the select fellows.

The next two trainings will be delivered in Anuradhapura end of this month.

“Reporting for Change on Skilled Migration” is CIR’s latest training and reporting initiative and offers 60 Sri Lankan journalists an opportunity to receive training on how to report on international labour migration with a focus on skilled migration with the top 30 receiving reporting fellowships.
